Tax returns and January 2010

I have only had my practice for about 12 months and January was horrendous with a much heavier workload than expected.

 

Can anyone suggest any ideas that have worked for them to drag the work in earlier in the year?

 

We had a lot of clients delaying bringing records in so they did not have to pay us - did others have the same problem?

I'm afraid there is no getting around the fact that some clients always leave it to the last minute! 

 

You could encourage your clients to pay in monthly installments by standing order as it will spread the cost for them and encourage them to bring their records in to you earlier.

 

You could also offer a collect service for records, I do this with most of my clients as my office is home based.

We had the same problem and

We had the same problem and January is always going to be bad.

 

We realised accounts were being delayed so in October we offered extended credit to those we thought had a problem.

 

We said if they brought the books in in Oct they did not have to pay until February, but we asked for a post-dated cheque. 

 

It did mean giving a bit of credit but did bring in some stuff early. They'd probably taken 3 months credit anyway

 

It also helped cut down on overtime in January
